Nottinghamshire bowler Harry Gurney has been named in the England squad for their tour of the West Indies and could also feature at the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh after being named as a travelling reserve.

England have announced a squad of 16 for the West Indies trip that also includes Nottinghamshire trio Stuart Broad, Alex Hales and Michael Lumb.

Gurney has made rapid progress since joining Nottinghamshire from Leicestershire ahead of the 2012 season.

“There’s an interesting few months ahead and I’m hugely excited to be departing for the West Indies.” Harry Gurney

“There’s a decent chance that I’ll be the man to come in if they need a replacement in Bangladesh and I’d like to think that this is reward for three consistent years with the white ball and some progress in four day cricket,” said Gurney, who took 74 wickets in all formats for Nottinghamshire last season.

“I’m looking forward to joining up in the squad and throwing my hat in the ring for a potential England debut.”

Gurney trained with England ahead of the 2013-14 Ashes tour having been asked to help prepare the batsmen to face left-arm quicks.

“Training with England ahead of the Ashes gave me a really good taste of the environment and gave the coaches and senior players an opportunity to have a look at me which I hope was a factor in this selection,” said Gurney.

“There’s an interesting few months ahead and I’m hugely excited to be departing for the West Indies.”

Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell has seen his side prosper in white ball cricket since the signing of the Loughborough born left-armer who was instrumental in the victorious campaign in last season’s Yorkshire Bank 40.

“This is a great opportunity for Harry at a time when England are crying out for a left-arm quick bowler,” said Newell.

“He’s in prime position to push his case for selection and training regularly with England will allow him to demonstrate the skills that have made him our first pick in white ball cricket.”

“Harry’s got good pace, he takes wickets in the first six overs of twenty20 innings and he is very adept with his yorkers at the death so it’s easy to make a case for him.”

England will face the West Indies in three One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches between Friday 28 February and Thursday 13 March.
