Bilal Shafayat registered an unbeaten fifty for West Indian Cavaliers to condemn the Nottinghamshire Academy to a seven wicket defeat.

Shafayat’s 40-ball knock followed a 32 from Akhil Patel as Cavs eclipsed the Academy total of 160.

The Academy had started poorly, losing Hassan Azad (4), Tom Rowe (5), Sam Kelsall (13), Sam Wood (0) and Anuj Dal (6) before Adam Tilcock and Brett Hutton mustered a meaningful partnership.

The sixth wicket stand ended when Tillcock (39) was trapped lbw by Usman Afzaal in the 35th over. George Bacon (15) put on 30 with Hutton but was out in the 42nd over (135-7) and the remaining three wickets went for 25 runs as Hutton (49) was caught going for a big hit to miss out on his fifty, the innings closing on 160. Ricky Anderson finished with 3-26 off 13 overs and Shahzada Khan 3-26 off 11 overs.

The Cavaliers reply began with Patel and Afzaal, the latter scoring 14 before getting caught by Tillcock off Luke Wood's bowling in the 4th over (22-1). Aaron Thomas joined Patel and they took the score on to 77 before Patel (32) was trapped lbw by Brett Hutton in the 21st over. Shaun Levy (7) shouldered arms and was lbw to Adam Tillcock in the 28th over (95-3) but Aaron Thomas soldiered on with Shafayat to complete the victory.
